Street in the Park champions the talent of young people in Dorset. It is a free, inclusive event that sees professional practitioners and organisations working with young people to produce, manage and create a live outdoor event. Street in the Park was conceived to give music technology students from Weymouth College experience in planning and running a project. It has since grown to become a fantastic community event highlighting the amazing local young talent right here in Dorset.
“Having worked at many youth festivals over the years, this one had a unique edge, it just felt like it was really what the young people wanted in terms of music - to have 50 young people dancing in broad daylight was incredible - and would be such a buzz for the DJs performing. I think a key feature was the style of music also - some of the up beat hard dance was such fun, ……. Also the age range at the event in general had the full spectrum.”
Up & Coming DJ Competition
In the lead up to Street in the Park, an Up & Coming DJ Competition is held with the support from DJ Andy Cleeton and Weymouth College Music Technology students. This competition is open to Dorset-based Up & Coming DJs. Successful applicants get the opportunity to battle it out at Street in the Park for the chance to win cash prizes, local radio dj sets and the opportunity to perform at other local events and festivals, including We Out Here Festival.

Working with young people
The event is run with, and for young people who work alongside a professional panel of DJ’s, rap artists, radio DJ’s and event and production organisers who work to nurture talent and offer the young people work experience opportunities and competition prizes. The lead up to the event offers inclusive activities to young people age 5-25yrs in street dance, rap writing, dj-ing, graffiti art, supporting skills development, confidence, progression and direction.
“Events like this are really important to the town, particularly to younger people, who lack quality activities to attend. Street in the Park is also a good opportunity for the young people who organise the event and perform at it, allowing them to grow their confidence, experience and skills.”
Videos & Films
“I am buzzing! Love the adrenaline and feeling so good!”
"I came onto the [Weymouth College Music Tech] course because of winning at Street in the Park. Last year, I didn’t know what I wanted to do. I was a bit lost. I didn’t have the best of times. But then I found music."
